TOEFL: Registration

In my last post about TOEFL exam, I had shared info on what TOEFL test is, where it is used and the test content. Now let's go through the TOEFL registration process.

Make sure to register for the TOEFL test well in advance, if you are planning to apply to Universities for the Fall Semester (courses beginning in August/September). Also choose a test date such that your score reports reach your beneficiaries within the deadline. Usually it takes 10 business days to more than a month, depending on the location where the universities are situated.

One can register for the TOEFL exam in 3 ways:Online registration
  • Registration by phone
  • Registration by mail

Online Registration:

  • The fastest and easiest way to register for TOEFL. Registration is open 24*7 and closes 7 days prior to the test date of your choice.
  • First, create your TOEFL iBT account online at the ETS-TOEFL website. The name you register with should match with the name on your Identification document that you carry to the test center.
  • Once your account is created, you can login and click on "Register for the test" link.
  • Make sure to exactly spell your name as it appears on the identification document you carry to the test center on the day of test.
  • Identification requirements depends on the location of your test center. For instance, if you are attempting the test in India, then a passport is a must and there is no other supplement to it. Click here, to know what documents you need to carry.
  • Also, while registering you will be required to enter the type and number of the identification document you will be carrying to the test center.
  • While registering for the TOEFL test, you will be asked to add the beneficiaries of your test score report. You can add up to 4 beneficiaries (after that, a $18 per score report will be charged). This can be done during registration or later, but not later than 10 pm on the day before your test. You can even modify your beneficiaries during this period.
  • Pay using a credit/debit card: American Express, JCB, Discover, Master Card or Visa.
  • You can also pay by using you Pay Pal account, or an e-check- if you have a bank account in the United States and its territories.
  • After the payment is successful, you can view and print your order and registration details, which will have to be submitted at the test center on the test date.
  • Also, keep checking your account to know if your test center has been changed to  avoid any confusions later.
