Germany leading it's way in Medical Field

Germany has always been one of the most sought-after destinations for advanced medical, dental and surgery training. Traditionally, medical students chose Germany for short stays and fellowship programs. However, according to a recent analysis by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), there has been an increase in the number of students aiming to pursue formal medical training and research in Germany.

This article, originally published in Economic Times reveals what challenges and opportunities await foreign medical aspirants in Germany.

According to one of the recent interviews with Dr. Namratha Jagdish, studying at Charite University of Berlin, one of the challenges for a foreign student looking for an opportunity in Germany is the advanced language skills. “German language skills are very important to get through the clinical exam. But after joining a position in a hospital, doctors start earning a stipend of €4,000 per month which increases every year. The initial internship is for five years, which can then be extended for two years,” she said.

While German language becomes a challenge for foreign doctors in Germany, those who are willing to learn are finding huge number of opportunities to realize their medical career in Germany.

German language skills are highly important for clearing the clinical exams and once placed in an internship at a hospital, the doctors are earning a stipend of 4000 euros a month which increases every year.

Indian medical students, especially those planning to take up jobs after they finish internship, face regulatory issues too. There are professional regulatory bodies that provide licences to practice medicine and dentistry in Germany. The requirements of the regulatory bodies vary from state to state and foreign medical students and doctors are expected to fulfill the regulatory criteria for each of these bodies to be eligible for future employment.
