New Zealand has always welcomed international students to pursue higher education of their choice. A degree obtained from a university in New Zealand is highly recognised throughout the world. One can find wide range of degrees and courses from basic science to cutting-edge technology.

Before we move on lets take a brief insight into the higher education system in New Zealand.

There are 3 major types of education providers in New Zealand:
1. Universities
2. Institutions of Polytechnics and technology
3. private training institutions

Tertiary education basically ranges from Certificate programs to Doctoral degrees. Each level is more complex than the one below it:
Certificates: levels 1 to 4
Diplomas: levels 5 and 6
Bachelors degree, graduate diplomas and certificates: level 7
Post-graduate diplomas and certificates and bachelors degree with honours: level 8
Master degree: level 9
Doctoral degrees: level 10

Certificates and diplomas can be obtained at polytechnics and institutes of technology. These institutes offer a more practical and vocational programme of study.

A degree in education and teaching can be obtained at a College of Education.

A university bachelor degree lasts for 3 to 4 years. Here one can combine their major subject of study with other related ones called as minor subjects.

After you have a bachelors degree, you can go for postgraduate studies like Masters or Doctorate degrees. While most of the courses require you to have a Masters degree before going for a Doctorate, there are some courses that accept intake of students with bachelors degree only. Again this depends on the depth of knowledge you have gained during your Bachelors degree.

New Zealand boasts to have 18 universities, 18 polytechnics and institutes of technology, 600 private training institutions and 20 industry training organizations.
