Study in Germany IV: Post-landing processes

Well, in my previous posts I had written about the education in Germany, Blocked account, German Visa etc.

Today, lets see what we need to do after landing in Germany.

So once you have landed in Germany, you will have many important tasks to be completed.

Things that need to be done ASAP:

1. Accommodation

In case you did not find any accommodation before leaving to Germany, you can stay in hostels or bed and breakfasts for the first few days until you find an accommodation. 3 star and 5 star hotels are also available but hostels and B&Bs cost comparatively lesser than the latter. In case your accommodation is already ready, then all you have to do is register yourself at the residency.

More information on finding an accommodation can be found at the Studentenwerk.

2. Enrolment at the university:

Once you reach Germany, your first priority is to enroll yourself at the university. Don't forget to be on time and carry all the important documents like University Admission Letter, your degree certificates, transcripts, financial statements, passport, some passport photos (let it be professional, with a white/light colored background) etc.

Once you have enrolled at the university, you will be given a Student ID card.

3. Registration at the nearby Foreign office:

The next step is to register your residency at the nearest foreign office in your city/town. For this, you will have to carry your passport, your university admission letter, your student ID card and a letter from the residency, i.e. student houses. If you are living in a private residency, then carry your house deed document signed by you as well as your land owner.

Remember if you ever change your residency in the future, do not forget to update your address at the Foreign Office.

4. Activating your Blocked Account:

Once your residency in Germany is registered and confirmed, the next step is to activate your Sperkento or Blocked Account.

To know how to open a blocked account, click here.

For this, you need to carry your passport, your university admission letter, your residency registration letter, proof of present address, account confirmation letter etc.

Go to the bank where you had opened the bank account. You will be given a form to fill. A small fee may be applied for activating the account. Once the account is activated you will be given a sperkento debit card, with limited withdrawals applicable per month.

See that you complete the above processes within the first three months of your stay to avoid any further legal issues.
